Chemicals are the hidden component in practically all industrial processes, be it extracting and purifying metals to producing plastics, textiles or coating materials. To keep producing these essential building blocks of society, we need to rethink standard practices in chemical processes.
We must also create a new green chemicals toolbox with processing chemicals that can be derived entirely from renewable resources. Old recipes from before the fossil-fuel era and radical new innovations will both be needed if we are to redefine how to produce and use renewable chemicals in the future. The chemicals team focuses on cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emission hunting that fundamentally redesigns how we make textiles, chemicals and batteries.
